Every night this week the Regal Theatre in Subiaco will come alive with the toe-tapping, show-stopping triple-threat that is Baz Luhrmann’s, Strictly Ballroom the musical.

The WA Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) takes on Luhrmann’s 1992 film of the same name, and re-imagines it, complete with original numbers and great new dance sequences.

The performance has been bolstered by internationally acclaimed art director James Browne who has been brought back to WA through WAAPA’s Visiting Artist program. Mr Browne is the production’s set designer and is working closely with the second and third-year musical theatre and music students.

Mr Browne is a graduate of WAAPA and also attended the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) in Art Direction. For almost twenty years he has travelled the world as a set designer and artistic director. He has worked on an incredible range of productions from Jamie Oliver’s stadium tour to the Australian Opera Company’s Aida.

Mr Browne is looking forward to the focus and intensity of the performance series. He hopes students gain valuable experience working under pressure in a demanding performance environment.

“If I could give one piece of advice to students, learn as much as you can. Be ambitious, focused, hardworking and humble,” Mr Browne said.

Minderoo is proud to partner closely with WAAPA for the Visiting Artist program. The program invites renowned Australian and international artists to come to WA to share their expertise with students through productions, workshops and masterclasses. The artists hail from a variety of disciplines, from sound and lighting to classical opera.

Perth audiences keen to experience Strictly Ballroom should expect a spectacle of slick, smooth musical theatre. The show runs until Sunday 23rd June. For more information and tickets, visit Ticketek.
