CoLab – Child Development Atlas

Gather and map data to identify the priority issues for WA child development.

What is the Child Development Atlas?

Children’s wellbeing and development can be influenced by the communities in which they live. The first resource of its kind in Australia, the Child Development Atlas maps data on area-level indicators of development, for children and young people in Western Australia.

The Child Development Atlas will put powerfully curated data in the hands of those who need it to inform their work. By addressing social inequalities and ensuring equitable access to goods and services, regardless of where children live, we hope to make sure every child in Western Australia thrives.

To improve child development outcomes we must understand the unique needs of communities and respond accordingly.

Why map this data?

The Child Development Atlas is an online, interactive mapping tool that will enable the profiling of geographic areas within Western Australia, to inform the planning and development of policies, services and programs aimed at improving the outcomes of children.

Mapping community characteristics with indicators of child development, can help researchers to provide insights into the associations between local environmental factors and children’s outcomes. These insights can help guide the development of policy tailored to the needs of a specific area.

The findings from this mapping project will primarily be aimed at a government agency level, with significant benefits expected to be realised across the state.

The Child Development Atlas is funded by the Ian Potter Foundation and the Minderoo Foundation, and is supported by CoLab, a partnership between the Minderoo Foundation and the Telethon Kids Institute. This project is informed by data provided by the Australian Early Development Census.
