It took 45 volunteers one hour to collect 14.3 kilograms of trash from just 200 metres of “pristine” Cottesloe beach .

The team collected over 2000 pieces of rubbish, including 196 cigarette butts and filters, 298 food packages, 76 rope and net scraps, 825 plastic fragments and 315 plastic objects.

This data was fed into the Australian Marine Debris Database, which has logged more than 13 million pieces of data since 2004 and provides a comprehensive overview of what amounts and types of plastic pollution are impacting Australian marine environments.
