Global Freedom Network

Faith leadership is a bright beacon of hope in the movement to eradicate modern slavery.

Why faith leaders should be engaged

About 84 per cent of the world’s population is religious, according to The Pew Research Center. Religious leaders therefore can create lasting, positive change by increasing awareness and action to end modern slavery in their community.

We believe reaching out through faith and gaining the support of faith leaders, is an effective method to educate the masses about our cause.

An initiative of Walk Free, The Global Freedom Network is committed to delivering systemic change by engaging and uniting faith leaders around the world to take spiritual and practical action to eradicate modern slavery.

Our process

We empower faith leaders to mobilise their efforts and work in collaboration with the private, public and civil sectors. By building relationships and collaborating with faith leaders and faith-based organisations we believe we can increase awareness understanding, impact, and action. The Global Freedom Network obtained commitments from faith leaders through their signing of the Joint Declaration of Religious Leaders Against Modern Slavery and encourages them to act on this commitment by providing support for change.

Our Declaration Signings:

  • The Vatican City, 2 December 2014
  • Canberra, Australia, 2 December 2015
  • New Delhi, India, 3 December 2015
  • Jakarta, Indonesia, 14 March 2017
  • Buenos Aires, Argentina, 16 November 2017
  • Medellin, Colombia, 26 August 2018
  • Auckland, New Zealand, 1 November 2018

We must recognise slavery as an urgent cause to unite all leaders, across faiths, borders and industries.

Our targets
  • Plan for and undertake further declaration signings around the world, including at an event in the Middle East
  • Leverage the impact of the GFN network to define work programs that sustain impact and drive action
  • Plan for the Vatican five-year reunion to showcase the work and achievements of committed signatories to date and set the next five-year program of work
